Blog 10 : AI

My thoughts on the movie AI are very similar to those I had when we watched the Star Trek episode with the robot Data. I can’t force myself to look at David in the same fashion as a human being. I find it ridiculous that they say David is a perfect little boy, who loves his ‘mother.’ After the instructions were followed, David suddenly started telling people he loved them. True love is not programmed. I also think another main characteristic of human beings is the aging process. How does this happen with a robot boy? I can’t look at something as a human if they have not gone through the experiences of getting older. Think if you were 12 years old for the rest of your life. How much knowledge did you have when you were 12 years old compared to your level of knowledge now? What would happen to David, or any robot boy, when the ‘adoptive parents’ die? Does he go to a different family, and get programmed to tell them he loves them? I just think the idea that a robot can be created in the likeness of a human being in the most important areas is hard to believe. The human brain is too complex, and the uniqueness of every individual cannot be duplicated. The move AI did a good job in presenting the idea, and creates a lot of very relevant questions that need to be answered for a lot of people.
