Artificial Intelligence Blog for the Quiz
In class we recently watched the movie A.I. which was directed by Steven Spielberg. In the movie a robot child goes to see Dr. Know who is apparently supposed to have knowledge about everything in the world. The problem about that surrounds Dr. Know is that he is a search engine and the problem surrounding search engines had not been resolved. When the robot child asks the search engine about the blue fairy he has to try numerous times implementing numerous techniques to come up with the answer that the robot child is actually seeking. This idea is addressed in a book by Dreyfus entitled on the internet. Dreyfus states that search engines will never be able to perform crucial searches and get all the knowledge that is out in the world but limit that to only the knowledge that the person is seeking to find. Dreyfus suggested that this is due to the lack of embodiment that it takes a body to understand such complex things and how the human mind and body works. In the book, Holding onto Reality by Borgmann he states that one day the content on the internet will be screened and junk will be removed. However, Borgmann did not address if we will get everything we want and nothing we don’t. Borgmann stated that the information would be more qualitative instead of quantitative.
With respect to the circumstance of creating a perfect search engine, I have to agree with Dreyfus and the movie artificial intelligence. We probably never will create a program which tells us everything that we want to know and nothing we don’t. It would be to hard to create this program. Especially since people think in a multitude of ways and we would have to create this program to work with that person.
