Leisure Time

After reading the texts of this class, as well as the dicussions in the class, I have relized that technology has become a prevalent part of what people do in their leisure time. For me personally, I spend much of my time on the internet. It is an easy way for me to stay connected to people and communicate. One thing that I also use a lot that has not been discussed much is television, but more specifically TIVO. Society as a whole, has become very busy and complex. People always have to be somewhere are have this thing to do. But at the same time, we have to watch that show at 9 pm. Tivo has made it very convenient for people to go on with their lives but atthe same time give people the luxury of being able to watch their favorite show whenever they get some free time.

Leisure time is an important part of everyones life. Technology has made us have te ability to have more leisure time than ever before. The problem that I see is if we begin to develop more and more leisure time we become less and less productive. We are using our leisure time to watch TV or surf the web. Instead we should be reading a book or interacting with people.

Everybody needs leisure time because it is the time that we are able to take a break from our stressful lives. However, with new technology, people are using leisure time more then needed. Technology is making people more lazy in school because now that the internet is available, there is no need to actually go to a library and research articles, now there are virtual libraries that make it able to just print of articles or anything else that seems valuable to the research material.

I agree that people are using devices more than they should during there leisure time, but I don’t find the simple act of using a device during leisure time bad in it of itself. I feel that using devices is perfectly fine as long as its in moderation. Also, technology can be used to facilitate interaction with others just as it can provide solitary entertainment. Again this should also be used in moderation. However, moderation would be along the lines of: “Am I using this because I’m lazy or is it really necessary at the moment?” More simply speaking, if you could simply had to walk ten feet to host a conversation with whomever you’re texting, and there are no other impediments (Such as: they live in a different hall than you) then you probably shouldn’t be texting that person. Also leisure time isn’t necessarily supposed to be productive. Like Alexandra said, “people always have to be somewhere…”, leisure time is supposed to be a break from the pressure of forced productivity. Now, if you can be productive with certain activities and enjoy them, ex: have a hobby, then that’s perfect for leisure time because you’re still escaping the pressure and stress.

Technology for me is very prevalent in my free time. Many people like to relax in nature or read a book, but I enjoy playing on the internet or video games. If this can allow me to relax then I will keep on doing it. I really see no harm in allowing ourselves to use technology in our leisure time, but when it controls our lives is when we need to be worried.

I thought the discussion in class today about leisure time was very interesting. It made me think alot about how I spend my time between scool, football, and work. When ever I have any leisure time, I spend the majority of it watching tv or surfing the internet instead of socializing physically with people or our environment. Sadly, our culture as a whole is moving in a direction where our socializing and interaction with others is through technology. If we change the way we spend our leisure time to enjoy the world as it is with out technology, we might enjoy the simpe things in life.
