Internet Reading

When we read on the internet, we typically are simply skimming over the material which does lead to a reduction in the time spent on reading. Which in all honesty, who has time to read anyways? The issue occurs because in skimming we sell ourselves short and may miss out on a greater meaning. I am someone who has started to apply the skimming used in the internet to reading in a book or in something that I am studying. I would probably say that I am not the only person doing this and that it is becoming more common. Simply pulling a few main points out of an article helps you understand but that doesn't mean that you have delved into the greater meaning that may be intended in the writing. Learning does occur in many different ways, but isn't the goal to improve ourselves? Simply skimming or pulling some ideas out sells ourselves short. Additionally, internet reading has lead to more distractions that interrupt our thinking. I notice that when reading, outside of on a computer, that I am more easily distracted. My mind has adapted to the influx of stimuli and now requires more to keep my attention. This shows me that I am losing the ability to concentrate and think about one idea as a means to deduce a greater meaning.
